My parents made howling error on my birth certificate and now people call me by a granny nickname
IMAGINE growing up with everyone calling you by one name – only to discover that you’d been officially registered as something totally different.
For one woman that became her reality – step forward Gabby Mayor.
Up until she was 15, Gabby thought the name on her birth certificate was Gabrielle.
However, when she was in her mid-teens, she found out that her mum and dad had mucked up her official documentation – and that they’d later had to change her moniker.
In a video posted to her social media account, Gabby wrote: “Thinking about how my parents made a typo on my birth certificate and I didn’t find out until age 15 that my real name is actually Babrielle.”
But the story didn’t stop there, as Gabby, whose TikTok profile is @gabbbbb16, was then nicknamed a ‘granny’ name by her social media followers after they were left majorly entertained by the story.
One person wrote: “Sorry about it Babs.”
Another TikToker joked: “So sorry about that Babby.”
While a third said she should appreciate her name – most commonly short for Barbara.
She typed: “I would insist on being called Babs and wearing scarves and costume jewellery daily.
“If the parents have a problem, tell them they made you a Babs.”
But it seems Gabby – aka Babrielle – isn’t the only person to have been through a similar mix-up.
Countless other TikTok users flocked to the video, which has been liked almost 300,000 times, to share their experience.
One wrote: “Mine on my birth certificate is Trinia instead of Trina.”
A second person recalled: “My mom forgot how to spell Brianna thanks to the epidural.
“Now my middle name is Brieanne. It took me 12 years to learn how to spell it.”
While a third chimed in: “Saraha when it was supposed to be Sarah. Didn’t know until middle school.”
And a fourth said: “My friend’s name is technically Bethang, not Bethany.”
And one took it one step further when they revealed: “At 16, I found out my birth certificate had ‘Tracy.’
“My name is Valorie.”
