Amex is offering 5x bonus rewards at US supermarkets when you refer a friend to open a card, but only for a limited time

American Express cards are some of the best credit cards for everyday spending, and now there's a chance for cardholders to earn a ton of bonus points, miles, or cash back when they refer a friend to open an Amex card. Amex is an Insider partner.

For a limited time, if you have an eligible American Express card and you refer a friend who is approved, you'll earn an additional 5x Amex Membership Rewards points, 5x miles, or 5% cash back (depending on your eligible card) on eligible US supermarket purchases for three months, starting from the date the referred friend's account is opened, on up to $25,000 in spending.

Additionally, there are improved offers for friends you refer to the American Express® Gold Card - Product Name Only, Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express - Product Name Only, and The Platinum Card® from American Express - Product Name Only, although those aren't the only cards you can refer folks to.

Here's how this new round of American Express refer-a-friend offers works.

We're focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card. These cards won't be worth it if you're paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it's important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.

American Express refer a friend offers

From March 9 to June 7, 2023, eligible Amex cardholders can get in on this bonus when they refer friends to qualifying American Express cards. If you have one of the cards below, you can participate in the offer:

Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card - Product Name Only

Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express - Product Name Only

American Express® Gold Card - Product Name Only

American Express® Green Card - Product Name Only

The Platinum Card® from American Express - Product Name Only

For example, if you have the The Platinum Card® from American Express - Editorial Name Only, you'd normally only earn 1 point per dollar at US supermarkets. But if you refer a friend and they're approved, you'll earn an additional 5 points per dollar (total of 6 points per dollar) on US supermarket spending on up to $25,000 for three months after their approval date.

Similarly, say you have the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card - Product Name Only, which usually earns 2 Delta miles per dollar at US supermarkets. With this promotion, you'd earn an additional 5x miles (7 miles per dollar total) on US supermarket spending for three months, up to $25,000.

Your friend can earn an elevated bonus, too

If your friend applies through your personalized link (more on that below) and is approved for the American Express® Gold Card - Product Name Only, Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express - Product Name Only, or The Platinum Card® from American Express - Product Name Only, they can earn a welcome bonus that's better than the current public offer.

These are excellent offers, since the statement credits included with the elevated bonuses can help offset all or part of the card's annual fees. And the American Express® Gold Card - Product Name Only and Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express - Product Name Only are particularly appealing if your friend spends a lot at US supermarkets, too, because that's a bonus category on both cards. How to refer a friend to an American Express card

To refer a friend to your American Express card, you can either sign in to your Amex account online and click on the bottom right of your account homepage where it says "Refer Friends. Earn Rewards." Alternately, you can navigate to Amex's direct refer-a-friend page and start the process from there.

The page will generate a customized link for you to share with your friends. As long as they apply for an eligible card through that link (and it doesn't have to be for the same card you're referring from), you should receive your referral bonus.

Your friend will have the opportunity to scroll through all the eligible cards they can apply for, including the elevated offers mentioned above.
