Support constructive dialogue, diplomacy between India and Pakistan: US
The United States supports constructive dialogue and meaningful diplomacy between India and Pakistan, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Thursday.
He emphasized that it is for India and Pakistan to determine the nature of the dialogue.
“We support constructive dialogue. We support diplomacy between India and Pakistan to resolve long-standing disputes. We are a partner, and we are willing to support that process in any way that they deem appropriate,” Ned Price said.
In a follow-up question, Price was asked about the US mediating the talks process between India and Pakistan.
He said, “Because these are decisions for the countries themselves. If they agree on a particular role for the United States, the US is prepared to, as a partner to both countries, support that process in any way that we responsibly can.”
“Ultimately, it is not for the United States to determine the modalities or how India and Pakistan engage one another,” he added.
Yesterday a report released by the US intelligence said
The statement comes a day after a report by US intelligence said that India is more likely to respond with military force to any Pakistani provocation under PM Modi’s leadership, the report said.
The relations between India and Pakistan have deteriorated over the Kashmir issue and cross-border terrorism.
Bilateral ties are presently at an all-time low between Pakistan and India. Pakistan’s Prime minister in January offered to hold a talk with India since he came to power last April. However, India rejected the offer saying this was not the right time for peace talks.
