[Softball] Softball Falcons show off diverse offense in sweep of Mustangs
WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons exploded to score 28 runs with different styles of attacks in a sweep of the Morningside University Mustangs today (Mar. 9) at Two Rivers Youth Complex. The Falcons routed the Mustangs 12-1 in the first game and finished the big day with a 16-7 victory in the nightcap.
An RBI infield single by Priscilla Mora (SO/Beaumont, Calif. ) opened the scoring in the first inning before an eight-run eruption in the second opened the flood gates in the first outing. A two-run double by Makenna Mitchell (SR/Orange County, Calif. ) was followed by the first career home run by Jayden Estabrook (SO/Tracy, Calif. ) and a three-run blast by Laila Spracklen (SR/San Diego, Calif. ) for an 11-1 cushion.
For good measure, Vanessa Sigala (JR/Carson, Calif. ) hit a two-run homer in the fourth frame to put an exclamation point on the Falcon victory.
Spracklen pitched five innings, giving up just one unearned run with seven strikeouts and two walks. Per usual, the San Diego, Calif. native also helped herself at the plate with her three-run homer.
The early going of the second game saw the Falcons use a different approach at the plate but with similar results, exhibiting an inordinate amount of plate discipline that resulted in six straight walks in a seven-run first inning. The frame featured four bases-loaded walks and a pair of RBI singles from Mitchell and Estabrook for a firm answer to the Mustangs getting a two-run home run by Sydney Peterson and a solo homer from Morgan Nixon in the top of the first.
After RBI singles in the second frame from Becca Dunn (SO/Jurupa Valley, Calif. ) and Sigala pushed the lead up to seven runs, a two-run homer by Kennedee Jones in the third brought the Mustangs within 10-6.
But the Falcons weren't deterred and brought the power back in play, as Spracklen doubled home Aleigha Gale (JR/Winfield, Kan. ) in the bottom of the third and scored on Carolyn Dallimore (SR/Patterson, Calif. )'s team-leading fifth homer of the season.
Spracklen and Dallimore weren't through, with the duo delivering RBI singles in the fourth to finish off the scoring and help the Falcons notch another run-rule victory.
Dallimore was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate and drove in three runs with three RBIs in the second game to raise her overall average to a team-high .552 on the season. Gale also crossed the plate three times for the Falcons (8-4).
Peterson drove in four runs for Morningside (9-6).
Isabelle Schwien (JR/Denver, Colo. ) was the game two starter for Friends and went five innings, allowing seven runs and striking out three against two walks to pick up the win.
The Falcons will next compete in the Tucson Invite from Mar. 12-14 in Tucson, Ariz. The first matchup will be on Sunday (Mar. 12) vs. Valley City State University. Click HERE for the entire schedule.
