[Men's Wrestling] Fantastic Night for Wrestlers as Four Advance to Friday's Action
Thursday night was a big night bounce back night for Williamson, as four of their five wrestlers won to advance to a second day of action on Friday.
Ainsley Doyle (SR/Wilmington, DE) at 133 pounds started things off with an exciting come-from-behind win over Alex Lamaj of Washington State University. Trailing 5-3 in the third period, Ainsley rallied to take a 7-5 lead and then hung on at the end to pull out a big 7-6 victory.
Chase Whartnaby (JR/Chichester, PA) was next at 141 pounds, where he was able to grind out a hard fought 11-6 victory over Lewis Granja of Clemson University to also advance to Friday's action.
Michael Kling (FR/New Castle, DE) at 149 pounds followed Whartnaby and needed all of 47 seconds to advance, as he pinned Aramas Eason of the University of Puerto Rico in commanding fashion.
Sadly, Daniel Tommarelli (SR/Springfield, PA)' s tournament came to an end, as he was pinned in the third period by Chase Egleston of Wayne State University at 157 pounds. Despite the loss, he still had a solid tournament, going 2-2 on the day with two pins to cap off his Williamson career.
Last up for the night for Williamson was Talon Pisarchuk (JR/Bensalem, PA) at 165 pounds. Whereas he was able to pin his first two opponents in the first period, this time around he had a much more difficult opponent in Terrance Mills of Allen University. Things were tied at 2-2 in the third period before Talon was able to grad a 3-2 lead and hang on to come away with the win by that same score. The victory moves him into tomorrow's quarterfinal round.
Ainsley, Chase and Michael will all compete in the next round of consolation matches in pursuit of earning All-American status. The top eight finishers in each weight class such status.
Despite just five wrestlers figuring in the team scoring, Williamson stands an astounding 24th place out of 101 colleges competing.
