On March 10, a pro-government fighter was killed and a civilian was wounded in two separate attacks in central Syria which were reportedly carried out by ISIS.
The fighter was reportedly a part of a National Defense Forces unit that attempted to repel an attack by ISIS terrorists on a group of civilians who were collecting truffles near the town of Kobajjep in the western Deir Ezzor countryside. The attack was repelled. However, a civilian was wounded and another was abducted by the terrorists.
Another group of truffle hunters stumbled on a landmine that was planted by ISIS terrorists in the area of al-Bruk in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside. At least nine were wounded as a result of the landmine blast.
ISIS cells in central Syria escalated their attacks against government forces and civilians in the region in the last few months.
According to a recent report by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 91 civilians have been killed by the terrorist group in the central region since the start of the year. Most of the victims were truffle hunters, shepherds or travelers.
In response to the recent wave of terrorist attacks, Syrian government forces and their allies deployed additional reinforcements in different parts of the central region. The Russian Aerospace Forces have also resumed airstrikes on ISIS cells there.
