[Men's Wrestling] Talon Pisarchuk to Wrestle for the National Championship
Since arriving at this year's 2023 NCWA national championship wrestling tournament, junior standout Talon Pisarchuk (JR/Bensalem, PA) has been a man on a mission. Always focused on the mat, he seemed to have been even more focused at nationals.
After easily disposing of his first two opponents via firs period pins, he had to battle through adversity in the round of 16 to come away with a narrow 3-2 win on Thursday night. If opponents thought that might show a "chink in his armor", they found out otherwise in a big way on Friday.
On Friday morning, Talon took on Ben Shepperd from Washington State University in the quarterfinal round. He literally put on a wrestling clinic during the match, methodically dominating his opponent in winning via technical fall, 15-0. To not give up a single point in a wrestling match is quite a feat. To not give up a single point to a seeded wrestler at the national tournament is almost unthinkable!
Talon was not done, however. He then took on another seeded wrestler from Apprentice, Landon Kisse in the semifinal round. He once again was dominant and almost shut Kissel out as well, leading 9-0 late in the match before giving up a strategic reversal to ride out the match and advance to the national championship final at 165 pounds.
Talon will next face the #1 seeded wrestler, Cole Nance, from Bellarmine University in the final at 165 pounds tomorrow night. The championship round is set to begin at 5:00 P.M. eastern standard time. He becomes the second wrestler in Williamson history to wrestle for a national title. Phil Carbonetta 0W2, lost the national title in 2001 at 141 pounds in double-overtime on a disputed call at the 2001 NJCAA national championships.
Win, lose or draw, what Talon has accomplished at nationals is beyond amazing. But knowing him, you can ignore the last two of those three words, as he will once again be laser focused on bringing home the national title. And with the way he is wrestling, you would have to be crazy to bet against him-#1 seeded opponent or not!
