Australia’s Afghan Diaspora Protests Against Women’s Restriction in Afghanistan
The Afghan diaspora in Vienna, the capital of Austria, organized a protest against the Taliban’s violation of women’s rights in Afghanistan in front of the regional UN office.
The protest was organized with the Afghan diaspora organization Afghanische Kultur, Integration und Solidaritat (AKIS).
The demonstrators included women and criticized the de facto government’s current restriction on women’s education and work in Afghanistan. They also raised slogans against the cruel treatment of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, particularly women and children.
Moreover, due to International Women’s Day on March 8, the United Nations expressed its concern for women and girls’ situation in the country and reiterated its support for Afghan women.
The recent report by the UN described the restriction on women and girls as a significant humanitarian and economic crisis in the world. It urged the Taliban-led government to reverse all decrees about women’s rights immediately.
Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, several decrees have been imposed that ban women from attending university and working in NGOs.
After the demonstration, The protest participants delivered a note to the United Nations officials, pleading with the member nations to take prompt action against the women’s restrictions.
