DIY fan saves herself £1.3k by making her own dining table – and everyone agrees it looks just as good as the real thing
A WOMAN has revealed how she managed to save herself an eye-watering £1.3k by creating her ideal dining table.
Interiors fan Abbey was browsing online when she spotted the home furnishing item she’d always dreamed of – but it came with a hefty price tag of almost £1500.
So instead of splashing out, Abbey decided to give it a go herself and start a brand new DIY project – something she’s had lots of success with in the past as she continued to renovate an old 1920s property.
She and her partner got their hands on some old scaffolding boards and then bought the rest of the things they needed to make their wooden bench-style table with black legs.
And, in doing so, they saved a whopping £1.3k as their total spend came to just £180.
And she shared exactly how they’d done it on her social media profile, @casacrank.
Alongside a picture of the inspiration behind their project – which was on sale for £1419 – Abbey explained: “When I saw the one I wanted at £1500, I said to Chris, ‘We can make that.’
“So we did – and it only cost us £180 plus the chairs.
So how did they go about it?
Abbey lifted the lid on their process, as she explained: “For the table we used 4x old scaffolding boards, sanded, stained and cut to size.
“We wanted a large table to fill the space so we went for 2m. We then used a gripfill to glue the wood together and added the legs in place.”
The keen DIY couple shared how they’d bought the legs from Amazon, with prices starting at £59.99.
She continued: “They came in a pack for a table and bench. They also do different styles.”
Once the legs were securely attached, they turned their attention to creating a frame to keep it all in place.
She went on to say: “We then cut pieces of wood to make a frame to attach to the underside of the table top to make sure it was sturdy.
“Then we closed our eyes and prayed it had worked as we tipped it over,” she quipped.
But their hard work had paid off, as it stood completely on its own and looked just like the inspiration image.
However, the hard work was far from over, as they also needed to make a bench to sit on one side of the table with the same materials they’d already used.
Abbey revealed: “For the bench we just cut x2 scaffold boards to size 180cm to make sure it fit under the table.
“And, again, we used a gripfill to attach together and then screwed on the legs.
“The bench didn’t need a wooden frame as it was sturdy enough.”
The final touch? Purchasing some black wooden chairs which fitted perfectly with the style.
She said: “We found the chairs to match from @ikeauk.
“We actually made this last year so the chairs have gone up in price, but the table has stood the test of time and we love it.”
And their social media followers were in agreement that it looked just as good – if not better – than the original one they were going to buy.
The video racked up almost 20,000 likes on Instagram, and a further 25,000 on their TikTok page.
One person commented: “Stop it – it looks so good!”
