Most Talented, Deepest UD Team Ever, Or a Bill of Goods?
All offseason we heard that this year's team was going to be the most talented, deepest team in UD history. But I think we were all sold a bill of goods. We definitely know it wasn't the deepest because we couldn't overcome our injuries. And I don't think in reality that we were all that talented either. Couple that with the fact that many of our players don't seem to fit the style of play we incorporate, and you get what we saw this year.
You can start with the two in-season transfers who obviously didn't bring much to the table talent-wise, especially Washington who was a fairly high-level recruit (part of our "best recruiting class ever"). Add in Zimi and Richard who contributed near nothing all season and there are four wasted scholarship players that aren't good enough for this level.
Our two starting bigs, Camara and Holmes, are probably the closest to "as advertised" on the roster. Even there, I don't think Holmes has been as good as he had been projected when he was recruited and thought of as a possible one or two and done. I think both would probably benefit from a style of play that allows them to get out on the break and fill the lanes, but sadly we did very little of that this year.
Mali, while certainly a serviceable PG, is nowhere near the level that we were accustomed to with his brother Scoochie and Crutcher, and what we were originally told was going to be a continuation of dominant PG play. He also would benefit from playing in a more up-tempo system both offensively and defensively, as he is a good disruptor on defense when given a chance to harass someone full court.
Our SG's, Brea and Elvis, are way to inconsistent and are not as good as we thought or as we would need them to be. Elvis definitely doesn't fit this offensive system and I'm not sure Brea does either.
Amzil has never reached the heights he achieved in his debut two years ago when he scored 22 points. As many have pointed out on this board, he seems to be better as a 4 than a 3 but he plays way more at the 3 than the 4. Last year he was a pre-season all-A10 selection and has not come remotely close to proving that.
Blakney, while being a good (not great) defensive player totally struggles offensively. What offensive skill he does have comes in the way of slashing to the basket, with and without the ball, and again our offensive system does not value that type of player. He also would probably benefit from getting out on the break and filling lanes.
Mike, in my opinion, started the year with great promise (playing the two mainly), was forced into running the point, which he did admirably, but then regressed when the two other guards returned. From what I see from Mike he thrives offensively when he can be creative, and our offense stifled any creativity he has. Defensively he was a bit overmatched this year, but that was to be expected from a freshman who often times had to guard a smaller, faster guard. Again, he is a player that would have benefited from a better tempo on offense.
All in all, I am not sure we were as talented as we thought when most of these players were recruited/transferred. And more importantly I'm not sure AG is bringing in the right type of players for the system that he is hell bent on running.
Sadly, I for sure was sold a bill of goods and I'm guessing many others on this board feel the same way.
