Driffield RUFC 106 – 7 Paviors RUFC
A sunny afternoon at Kelleythorpe as Driffield welcomed Paviors RUFC for their 1st visit to East Yorkshire.
Paviors made the journey from Nottingham in a relegation fight with Scunthorpe, at kick off Paviors had a 4 point lead on Scunthorpe, with both teams having two games remaining after this weekend. Driffield on the other hand were looking to maintain our push for second place in the league, with Heath 1 point behind, but with a game in hand, Driffield needed a 5 point win.
A full pre-match lunch, and a large crowd gathered as the teams took the pitch. The 5 minutes proved to be tight, with both sides pushing to find a way through each others defence. It was 7 minutes in when the first score came, Rix crossing for Driffield, Watts missing the conversion. From this moment on, Driffield never looked back, try’s by Turner, Adam Brankley, Watts, Jenkinson, Dinsdale, Blacker, Sowersby x 2, Grant, with Watts adding 7 conversions to make the half time score Driffield 59 – 0 Paviors.
Unfortunately for Paviors, Driffield wanted to press home the advantage and carried on the scoring throughout the second half, with further tries from Short, Falkingham, Dinsdale, Jenkinson, Pettinger , Rix & Tom Brankley, with Watts adding a further 5 conversions, and Pettinger kicking a conversion too.
It has to be said that Paviors never gave up, and we rewarded at the death with converted try, Alex Rimmington scoring, George Billam with the conversion to make the final score Driffield 106 – 7 Paviors.
For the second time in a season Driffield have scored over 100 points in a game, which must be a first for us. Both of these scores came against opposition from Nottingham, with West Bridgford & Paviors on the receiving end. The bottom 4 teams in the league are from the Midlands leagues and have all found it hard going this season.
Driffield had a great day of Rugby, playing some great rugby, showing what we are capable doing to some teams.
We had all 4 teams playing on Saturday, and managed to get 4 wins. 2nds beating Hull Ionians 82 – 5, 3rds beating BP Rufc 57 – 12 & 4ths wining at Malton 33 – 24 a great day for Driffield RUFC.
The club also raised over £4,000 for the Leeds Hospitals Charity in memory of Frankie Beasley, Many thank from us all & the Beasleys to everyone who donated.
Our attention now turns to the 2nd teams campaign for their league, with a big game against Wharfdale second team coming up at the weekend, with a sold out pre-match lunch.
We still have the RFU cup to compete in, the draw should take place today to see who & when will be playing.
