Former Chelsea midfielder urges Tottenham star to be ‘selfish’
Ruud Gullit has urged Harry Kane to be selfish and push for a move away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer in order to maximise his chances of winning silverware.
Despite the fact that Tottenham’s trophy drought looks set to extend into its 16th year, there have been some positive updates over the last 48 hours regarding Kane’s future.
The Athletic reported on Monday that despite the striker being down to the last 15 months of his contract, the North London club are not thinking about a sale and are determined to tie him down to a new deal.
Football.London revealed on Tuesday that Kane is willing to discuss fresh terms with the Lilywhites and that the striker’s future is not tied to Antonio Conte’s.
However, Gullit believes that the time has come for the 29-year-old to make the tough decision to leave his boyhood club so that he can finally win trophies.
The former Chelsea man told Voetbal International: “If I were him, I’d be selfish and say, ‘I’m leaving’. Many players are loyal to their club, but do not win anything. What good is that? As a footballer you want to win prizes, don’t you.
“When you are not good enough as a player, a club says: ‘Thank you for services rendered’. But if a club is not good enough, then as a player you have to seize the opportunity to win prizes elsewhere.
“I am still grateful that I got to play with Johan Cruyff. He said to me: ‘Ruud, if you decide to leave Feyenoord, it will loosen things up and the supporters will not be happy, because you are a very good player. But you have to think of yourself.
“I did that and then went to PSV. We won two trophies and then I could go to AC Milan. The PSV supporters in turn weren’t happy about that, but as I said earlier, as a footballer you want to win prizes. For me, it is ultimately about what you have on your resume after your career.”

Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think any Spurs fan will begrudge Kane if he pushes for a move away in the summer and I do not think the club hierarchy will stand in his way either.
However, the 29-year-old essentially has just one option in Manchester United and there are no guarantees that the Red Devils are going to finish comfortably above us or that he is going to be their top striker target, which is why I think there is more than a decent chance of Kane signing a new deal if we finish in the top four.
