Islamabad Police Fails to Arrest Imran Khan as Atrocities Continue
The clash between the PTI supporters and Islamabad police to arrest Former Prime Minister Imran Khan continues at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore, which has resulted in the injury of hundreds of people, according to sources.
After a day-long escalation between PTI supporters and police came to pause outside Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence, the Lahore High Court on Wednesday summoned the Punjab inspector-general, chief secretary, and Islamabad (operations) head.
According to Dawn daily, Imran Khan’s residence was surrounded on Saturday, and the efforts for his arrest started on Tuesday, which prompted serious resistance from Khan supporters. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Punjab police has reported that more than 100 policemen have been injured as escalations continued throughout Tuesday night with PTI supporters. According to Fawad Chaudhry, a prominent member of PTI, hundreds of Khan’s supporters have been wounded so far.
LHC’s Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh, while hearing a petition filed by PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry seeking to stop the “atrocities” outside Zaman Park, passed these orders.
After an hours-long back and forth — described by international media as “pitched battles” — the personnel pulled back to Mall Road, from where they cleared out. The new developments at the scene has been confirmed by local sources.
Imran Khan’s lawyer stated that what happened outside Zaman Park today was a violation of fundamental rights. “Imran’s residence has become a war zone. The police have been stationed there for the past 21 hours,” he said.
PTI supporters have had clashes with security forces in other major cities of Pakistan including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and Quetta in the past months.
Islamabad police has failed to control the chaos and arrest Khan, therefore, commando forces have been dispatched to the area, according to Geo News.
Imran Khan has been allegedly accused of persistently skipping court hearings regarding the Toshakhana case and hiding his personal assets from the Pakistani government.
