My teachers hated me because of my common name – my mum insists it’s pronounced a certain way and it confuses people
DECIDING whether to give your kids a unique name or something more simple is a tricky decision for parents.
One mum thought she managed to get the best of both worlds when she landed on a common name for her daughter with a unusual spelling.
Posting on Facebook, Kaitlynn explained why her name is a total tragedy.
Despite having a seemingly normal name, Katlyn said her mum gave her a “a life time of saying ‘actually it’s pronounced this way.”
It’s all because her mum insists the ‘T’ in is silent, she revealed.
Meaning Katlynn’s name is actually pronounced ‘Kay-Lynn’.
“My English teachers all hated me,” she joked.
Other Facebook users couldn’t wrap their heads around why her mum would include the ‘T’ in her name if it’s supposed to be silent.
Some even said they’d change the spelling as soon as they could to make life easier for themselves.
“Honestly, I think I’d change the spelling of my name to match the pronunciation, in your case.
“I would be unwilling to spend my life correcting already correct people,” one commented on the post.
A second agreed: “Then why didn’t she spell it Kailynn? someone needs to teach your mum how letters work.”
“At some point I’d have told my mom that if she wanted me to be called Kaylynn she should have spelled it Kaylynn and not Kaitlynn,” a third chimed in.
Others thought the pronunciation was totally bonkers too: “Omfg the T is silent in what world was mom living in,” another user wrote.
“I think your mom is wrong,” someone else quipped.
Meanwhile other users thought Kaitlynn should lean into the mismatched spelling and pronunciation.
One joked: “I’d start spelling it like Mkaitlynn and be like ‘the M is silent, like mnemonic and the T is silent like in subtle.'”
And another thought the whole thing was just a big blunder, they said: “They just misspelled that one and are too embarrassed to admit it lol.”
