Axed Sky TV show is coming back 13 years after getting the chop – but there’s a twist
US hit musical drama Smash is set to make a return – but not in the way fans expect.
The show starred American Idol’s Katherine McPhee, Will and Grace star Debra Messing and the legendary actress Anjelica Huston.
It first aired in February 2012 but ended in May of the same year.
The show aired on US TV network NBC before airing on Sky Atlantic in the UK and followed the behind the scenes antics of a fictional Broadway musical called Bombshell.
Powerhouse Steven Spielberg was behind the show, and is involved in it hitting the stage on New York’s famous Broadway theatre district.
And the famous film and TV producer said: “Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it was always my hope that a musical inspired by the show would eventually come to the stage.
Steven Spielberg added: “We now have an incredible creative team, and I’m looking forward to completing the Smash journey which began with my producing partners over ten years ago.”
And the producer of the original series, Robert Greenblatt said: “Speaking for myself and Neil Meron, we’re elated that Steven wanted to join us as we bring Smash to the stage, as we’ve always felt that Shaiman and Wittman’s incredible score belonged on Broadway. “
He added: “And collaborating with the incomparable Susan Stroman, one of the best directors of musicals, plus first-class bookwriters, Rick Elice and Bob Martin, and our original choreographer, Josh Bergasse, is pure joy.”
The show revolved around a group of characters that often led quite chaotic lives as they balanced that with the demands of the theatre.
Despite its short spell, the series won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography among four nominations.
The first episode earned more than 11 million viewers but a few months later, the viewing figures dropped to a little more than 5 million.
