The Chicago Bears came out swinging to start the 2023 free agency period. They handed out large contracts to guys like Tremaine Edmunds, Nate Davis, T.J. Edwards, and DeMarcus Walker. One would think that was enough to get the team in a position to focus solely on the NFL draft for the time being. However, that might not be the case. While everybody knows about the NFL’s salary cap ceiling, there is also a salary floor. That represents the minimum amount of money a team must spend to comply with CBA rules.
According to Pro Football Focus salary cap expert Brad Spielberger, the Bears aren’t anywhere close to that floor yet. They still have a long way to go, and he believes there are several moves still to come.
Believe the Bears need to spend another ~$45M or so in 2023 cash even after paying the current draft picks
I expect them to be active in the cap casualty market, and with veterans that wait later in the offseason to sign closer to Week 1 https://t.co/qrWZTN4bju
It is somewhat surprising the Bears haven’t signed more free agents already. There are plenty still available. It could be that several of them have decided to wait until after the draft to get a better gauge of their market. There is also the possibility several veterans still on current teams might get released once younger players arrive to replace them. It happens every year. GM Ryan Poles may wish to take advantage of that opportunity.
The Chicago Bears aren’t up against the clock yet.
They have plenty of time to reach this goal. It will be interesting to see how the market shifts in May. Initial rumblings are some notable names that might become available. Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore is one. New York Jets pass rusher Carl Lawson is another. Trent Brown is another one to watch in New England. Any one of them would fill a considerable need on the Bears’ roster. Poles may wish to wait until he sees what he can pull off in the draft next month. He has ten picks at his disposal.
Maybe he even goes after another trade target. The Chicago Bears haven’t been afraid to acquire players via that method. It comes down to price and value. Poles isn’t going to spend for the sake of spending. He wants to spend the right way. The main point remains that several more moves are on the way, and some of them could be significant to the team’s 2023 prospects. Keep an eye on the waiver wire. It could be a busy next two months.
