Iona transfer Walter Clayton Jr. to visit Florida, St. John’s

Iona transfer Walter Clayton Jr. is focusing on two schools for his next destination.
The 6-foot-2 sophomore guard and native of Lake Wales, Fla., will visit Florida this weekend and then St. John’s next week.
“I’ll be at Florida Friday through Sunday,” he said by phone.
As for St. John’s, he said, “I don’t know the exact day yet but I’ll be there next week.”
He’s focusing on those two schools.
“There ain’t nobody else that’s trying to get involved really,” he said.
As for Florida’s recruiting pitch, he said: “They’ve been talking to me a little over the phone, but really just coming home. I’m a Florida kid, always wanted to go to Florida growing up so that’s one of the things there.”
Clayton played for new St. John’s coach Rick Pitino at Iona.
“Obviously., St. John’s [has] Coach P,” he said. “Basically same thing, come play for him. He makes pros, I’m trying to be a pro.”
Clayton averaged 16.8 points and 3.2 assists playing for the Gaels as they won the MAAC regular-season and tournament titles before losing to UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Also transferring out of Iona are Quinn Slazinski, Nelly Junior Joseph and Cruz Davis.
The program this week named former FDU coach Tobin Anderson as Pitino’s successor.
