Ryan Poles demonstrated his willingness to gamble when he traded the #1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers for four draft picks and wide receiver D.J. Moore. The Chicago Bears GM explained the move was made for multiple reasons. He feels one player isn’t enough to pull this team out of the basement, and there aren’t any truly special players in this draft class. Presuming he holds to this philosophy, it might not be too crazy to think he’d trade back a second time. Poles has said he believes having lots of picks grants flexibility and more bites at the apple to find great players.
It’s something he learned well during his time in Kansas City. The Chiefs traded back and even out of the 1st round a few times during his time there. It bred confidence that he could still find quality players no matter where he ends up picking. Rumors have already circulated that Chicago is more than open to moving down again. Former team scout Greg Gabriel confirmed this. Now the smoke grew thicker, this time courtesy of Poles himself in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times.
Now that the Bears have traded too far back to reach the “blue” players Poles identified at the top of the class, it would probably be even easier to stomach trading back again to stockpile extra picks.
“We’re open to that,” said Poles, who didn’t rule out trading back up, either. “It depends on what the deals look like, but there’s also multiple drop-offs as you go back throughout the draft. So we might not think that’s the best way to go because a certain drop-off at a certain premium position might be coming up soon. We stay fluid.”
Ryan Poles is in a pretty good spot.
He doesn’t have to trade down. Most experts believe if he stays put at #9 overall, there is a strong likelihood he will have all three of the top offensive linemen in the draft available. He might also have a highly-rated pass rusher or cornerback too. There will be good options. However, there is rarely a shortage of teams interested in moving into the top 10. Since 2012, a team has traded from outside the top 10 into the top 10 a total of 12 times. The Bears should have no problem getting a favorable offer if the right player is available.
It comes down to how far Ryan Poles would be comfortable moving. Gabriel said the true strength of this draft would center between the 20th and 50th picks. Right now, the Bears have none in that range. Poles could change that by either moving down from #9 or down enough to secure a pick in that range. We already know he isn’t afraid of doing the unconventional. It’s all about whether he gets an offer he deems fair. That won’t become clear until the Bears are on the board next month.
