I’m a dog expert – here is why you SHOULDN’T buy two pups from the same litter
IF you’re looking to become a dog owner you may think buying two pups at the same time is a sweet deal.
But one dog expert has explained why you should never buy two puppies from the same litter if you want to avoid disaster.
TikTok user American Standard K9 is the self-described “#1 Dog Trainer on the Interwebs!”
He shares dog training tips and tricks, and advice on how to properly take care of your pet.
In a TikTok video, he shared the reason why you should never buy two puppies from the same litter.
The dog expert says: “Dog breeders need to stop selling more than one puppy per family.”
“The reason for it… littermate syndrome.”
Littermate syndrome can occur when two puppies adopted from the same litter grow up together in the same home.
In some cases, the puppies form such a deep bond with each other that they fail to properly socialise with other dogs, in other scenarios the two dogs constantly fight for territory.
Signs of littermate syndrome include fear other dogs, intense anxiety when separated, even briefly; and difficulty learning basic obedience skills.
The dog expert says: “If your breeder doesn’t know what littermate syndrome is, don’t buy from them.”
“If your breeder wants to sell you two dogs at the same time, that’s because they’re looking at one thing and one thing only, and that’s cash in their pocket.”

“They’re looking for that two for one deal. Don’t be a part of that scam.”
“Littermate syndrome is a real thing. Look it up. It happens all the time.”
“One of the biggest issues we deal with with dogs in our training program are dogs that come from multiple dog family households.”
“And especially when it’s puppies raised along other puppies. Buying two puppies at the same time? Horrible idea.”
“Do not buy from breeders that are willing to sell you two puppies at the same time. They’re in it for the cash. They’re not doing it for the right reasons.”
The dog experts video gained over 19,000 views.
One user said: “We have two from the same breeder but different litters & different breeds (English and Welsh) and a year apart.”
Another said: “I have 2 boys are that are from the same litter, yea they are little d**ks sometimes but mainly they listen, but they can’t be separated from each other.”
Some users argued the gender of the puppies was what made a difference.
One user said: “Buying two females is never a problem or both males…… That’s how I understand it.”
