Brother of 26-year-old World Cup star reveals Man Utd wanted loan move in January
Manchester United tried to sign Sofyan Amrabat on loan from Fiorentina in January, according to the midfielder’s brother.
The 26-year-old was impressive for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup. He started all seven matches in Qatar, playing a vital role in helping his nation reach the semi-finals of the competition.
His incredible performances in the prestigious tournament led to interest from several top European clubs.
In a recent interview, the player’s brother Nordin revealed that three clubs attempted to sign him during the final days of the January transfer window.
United tried to secure the midfielder’s signature, but Fiorentina turned down their offer.
Nordin told Voetbal Primeur: “I can name three clubs who were concrete in the last two or three days of the transfer window.
“Manchester United wanted a loan with an option to buy deal, Fiorentina rejected.”
United should make another attempt this summer
Amrabat is a highly talented player who has been earning rave reviews in Serie A.
He has established himself as a key member of the Fiorentina team, making 37 total appearances this season.
His amazing performances have seen him linked with Barcelona and Liverpool.
However, United also seem to rate him very highly. They tried unsuccessfully to sign him in January but should make another attempt this summer.
His current contract at the Stadio Artemio Franchi expires in June 2024. His current employers want to tie him down to a new contract but will likely sell him if he refuses to pen an extension.
United signed Marcel Sabitzer on loan from Bayern Munich, but the Austrian is expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season. Amrabat would be an excellent replacement.
