I tried Selena Gomez’s cheap makeup and skincare tips — I’ll use her lash trick daily and her $10 CVS buy got full marks
SHE’S best known for her singing and acting credentials, but Selena Gomez is also a pro on all things beauty.
The 30-year-old star, who owns makeup brand Rare Beauty, often goes viral on TikTok for her tips and tricks.
And Selena’s not plugging her own products, but rather sharing makeup application tips and cheap drugstore products which she rates.
Quick, affordable, and easily accessible? We were instantly sold, and decided to put them to the test.
Here’s what I found when I gave myself a Selena approved makeover…
THE FACE MASK: 5/5
In a recent video, Selena surprised fans when she used an affordable drugstore mask to prep her skin before her skincare routine — the Urban Hydration Aloe Vera Gel Mask ($10).
“All products found at CVS I’ve used all week,” she said as she wiped the mask off with a washcloth. “Super affordable and works!”
On bare skin, I applied the mask according to the instructions: all over my face in a thick layer and left on for 15 minutes.
After my timer went off, I washed it off with cold water and was surprised by how bouncy and moisturized my skin felt, netting the mask a 5/5 score.
THE TONER: 5/5
Moving on to skincare, Selena shared more affordable products that she had been enjoying, including a brow oil, toner, and serum.
I applied the Paula’s Choice Advanced Replenishing Toner ($26), a milky anti-aging product containing omega fatty acids and antioxidants.
As a long-time fan of the brand’s chemical exfoliant, I was not surprised that I liked the toner, which plumped and hydrated the skin, and scored the easiest 5/5 so far.
THE SERUM: 3/5
Next came the Neutrogena Bright Boost Illuminating Face Serum ($17), a daytime serum with a pearl shimmer finish that’s supposed to provide the skin a glow.
Even with the glitter, however, I couldn’t quite see the effect it was supposed to have, plus the dropper packaging made the product extremely difficult to get out, so I gave it 3/5.
THE BROW OIL: 4/5
Moving onto makeup, Selena did a quick and easy brow look by sweeping her hairs up with some castor oil ($7) on the back of a spoolie.
Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with full, beautiful brows, or at least, certainly not me.
While I did enjoy the smell of the oil, it didn’t have quite enough lift to replace my usual brow gel; I plan on utilizing the oil as a nighttime skincare step to help with brow growth instead, 4/5.
THE MASCARA TRICK: 5/5
Last but not least, Selena previously shared a tip for getting mascara on your bottom lashes without smearing.
It’s popular with beauty bloggers – some of whom have claimed it looks like professionally applied false lashes.
The trick? Applying mascara on a pair of tweezers and squeezing the lower lashes individually with the tool to coat them.
I whipped out a pair of tweezers I had lying around and got to work.
Although it was a bit tedious and a lot time-consuming, I was blown away by the results, earning the hack a 5/5.
As someone who applies mascara on their bottom lashes daily, this is one trick that is going on my permanent roster, especially on days when smudged eye makeup is not an option.
