Green Bay Packers fans seem convinced the Jordan Love era will be something special. It’s hardly a surprise they believe this. The past three decades of football have conditioned them to think the franchise will always have elite quarterback play. It started with Brett Favre in 1992 and was carried forward by Aaron Rodgers starting in 2008. That run consists of 23 playoff appearances, three Super Bowl berths, and two Lombardi trophies. Few have a better understanding of this than Andy Reid. He coached Favre in Green Bay and went against Rodgers for many years during his time in Philadelphia and Kansas City.
One would think the future Hall of Famer has high hopes for Love. Well, that isn’t exactly true. NFL media caught up with Reid at the annual owners meetings down in Arizona. They asked him about the young Packers QB as he finally prepares to replace Rodgers as the starter. The head coach seemed confused, and ultimately admitted he didn’t know who Love was.
What makes this even worse from Love’s perspective is he actually started against Reid’s Chiefs in 2021. He completed less than 56% of his passes for 190 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also fumbled once. Green Bay lost 13-7.
One can understand why Andy Reid doesn’t remember him.
Nobody has a sharper eye for quarterbacks than him. He’s coached some of the best in NFL history, from Favre to Donovan McNabb to Patrick Mahomes. One would think he knew who Love was since teams always evaluate quarterbacks in every draft. The guy went in the 1st round in 2020. Nope. Reid had no recollection of the guy. That means he failed to make an impression both as a draft prospect and a young player in his first start. That can’t be a good sign from the Packers’ perspective.
The entire Rodgers saga has been one slow-motion demolition. People keep trying to talk up Love, but let’s be honest. If the kid was truly what the Packers hope he can be, there is no way the organization would’ve saddled themselves with that gigantic contract extension they gave Rodgers last year. Now it’s an anchor around their necks. Optimism for the Love era isn’t nearly as strong as it was 15 years ago with Rodgers. Maybe he defies the odds, but Andy Reid doesn’t see it.
