[Men's Tennis] Young Mechanics Tennis Squad Battles in Season Opener
With a line-up that included an entirely new singles line-up from a year ago, a young Williamson tennis team took on Penn State Brandywine on the road Wednesday afternoon. Despite their inexperience and a to be expected slow start, the Mechanics put forth a solid showing in a losing effort before falling to the Lions, 6-3.
Penn State handily won the opening doubles matches, sweeping things by a score of 8-2, 8-0 and 8-5. They lengthened their lead by sweeping the first three singles matches, before Williamson swept the next three singles matches to close things out at 6-3.
Alex Rivera (FR/Philadelphia, PA) got Williamson on the board as he won his match at fifth singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Michael Ashton (FR/Aston, PA) won a lengthy match at fourth singles, coming away with a 7-6, 6-2 win at fourth singles. Isaiah Joubert (JR/Chester, PA) closed out the scoring for Williamson with a three-set triumph, winning 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.
"I'm extremely proud of each and every guy today and I hope they are proud of themselves. That was a great effort across the board," shared first year head coach Weemie Kingham. "We have a lot to go over but I could not be prouder of them."
Williamson is off for Spring Break. They next take on Ocean County College on the road on Tuesday, April 18.
