And Yet They Get Stronger – Tony Mowbray Identifies Club Sunderland Should Emulate
The Black Cats are having an impressive first season back in Championship after earning promotion last term from League One.
Sunderland have adopted a transfer strategy of signing talented young players, but have felt stretched in some important areas, notably in the forward position in the ongoing campaign.
Mowbray’s side will be looking to address those problem areas in the squad during the upcoming transfer window and the Sunderland boss pointed out that the club should follow Brighton’s model.
The Wearsiders manager believes that they need to recruit top talents to fill their squad and make sure that the players will always be ready to step into the first-team role in the event of the departure of an important player.
However, Mowbray admits that achieving their goal in a single transfer window will be impossible due to financial constraints and stressed that the process will be time-consuming.
“[Leandro] Trossard leaving Brighton to go to Arsenal, yet the [Brighton] team just keeps getting better”, Mowbray was quoted as saying by Chronicle Live.
“Why? Because they’ve got all these top players ready to step in.
“We have to fill Sunderland full of top players, and then you have no problem selling one somewhere down the line and reinvesting the money.
“It takes a bit of time, it takes a few transfer windows – unless you have loads and loads of money in any one given window.
“The key is quality, really, quality footballers who can play the way the coach wants to play.”
Sunderland are 12th in the league table and will take on Hull City at the Stadium of Light this evening.
