The Rays are the hottest team in MLB out the gate this year. In fact, Tampa is making history with its undefeated run to start the 2023 season, as its latest win over the Athletics saw it further its unblemished streak to eight games.
At 8–0, the Rays are just the third team since 1990 to start a season with such a record, joining the 2003 Royals and 1990 Reds, per ESPN Stats and Info.
Additionally their plus-46 run differential makes them the third team since 1901 to have outscored opponents by 40 or more in its first eight games, putting the 2023 Rays in company with Cleveland’s 1999 squad and the 1955 White Sox. It’s also the highest run differential across a team’s first eight games since 1884, according to MLB’s Sarah Langs.
Tampa won 11–0 against Oakland on Saturday, marking its eighth consecutive win by four or more runs. That’s the longest such streak since the 1939 Yankees.
With 64 runs scored, averaging eight per game, the Rays offense has been obliterating baseballs. They’ve hit 21 home runs already this year, more than the 18 total runs their pitching staff and defense have surrendered. For comparisons sake, no other team has more than 55 runs (Boston) and the next highest team home run tally is 16 (Dodgers, Giants).
The Rays close out their current series against the A’s on Sunday before hosting the Red Sox from April 10 to 13, as they try to keep their historic start rolling.
