My sister Sabina Nessa was murdered by a twisted monster – his final insult before being jailed rocked our family
THE sister of slain schoolteacher Sabina Nessa has revealed her sister’s killer snubbed their family even after her death.
Jebina Islam, 31, said killer Koci Selamaj refused to listen to her impact statement after her sister’s brutal killing.
Jebina is now campaigning for a law which would force murderers to face their victims families in court.
She said: “The law needs to be changed as soon as possible because we’re now seeing it quite regularly, when defendants don’t appear for their sentencing.
“There’s a pattern of behaviour now and it’s just not fair on families. People are not going to get their loved ones back, I won’t get my sister back, but it’s something.”
Jebina said Selamaj should not have been given the power to choose whether or not to listen to her statement.
She continued: “He killed my sister, he murdered her in such a horrific way and simply thought, ‘I’m going to stay in my cell.’
“It was such a kick in the teeth. I felt such anger at what a coward he was.
“He had an option to listen to my victim impact statement via video link from his cell and he refused that as well.”
Now, Jebina hopes to name the law after her late sister Sabina, who is remembered as a loving schoolteacher and friend.
Sabina was walking to a pub in South East London in September 2021 when Selamaj hit her over the head 34 times with a 2ft-long metal traffic triangle.
He then carried her unconscious body up a grassy bank and out of view, where it was found just hours later by a horrified dog walker.
But Jebina remembers the good times with her sister, prior to her untimely death.
She reflected: “There’s obviously that missing chair where she would be sitting, but we’re sticking together as a family and talking about our memories of her.
“She would want us to be positive. She was a positive, determined, happy person.”
