Report: Spurs have ‘promised’ to make offer for midfielder this summer

According to the print edition of Record (07/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham have informed Sporting Lisbon that they will be making an offer for Manuel Ugarte this summer.

Ugarte has established himself as a mainstay in Sporting’s midfield this season and has impressed both domestically and in Europe.

Tottenham caught a first-hand glimpse of the 21-year-old in their two Champions League group stage games against the Portuguese club earlier in the season and reports of the North London club’s interest in the youngster first emerged back in November of last year (A Bola).

Record have now claimed that the Lilywhites have ‘prioritised’ a move for Ugarte when the transfer window opens this summer.

The Premier League club have allegedly ‘promised to move forward with an official proposal’ for the Uruguay international, who is said to have a release clause of €60m (£53.1m) in his £contract.

The report adds that Sporting are open to cashing in on Ugarte since they need to raise funds before making any new signings this summer.

Ugarte looks primed to explode and he could potentially be worth double what he is now in 12 months’ time. 

However, there is also an element of risk involved with signing a player who has essentially had only one good season in the Portuguese top flight.

So, I would be surprised if Spurs were ready to pay upwards of £35m-£40m for the 21-year-old.
