How heat waves could scorch different sectors and melt India's GDP growth

0
India's economic growth is at risk as heat waves become more frequent and extreme. Climate change-induced weather patterns are already causing inflation and supply shortages in India's agriculture industry, which makes up a small portion of its GDP but affects the purchasing power of the country's rural population. Heat waves also impose high energy demands that could strain India's power grids, as air conditioning and groundwater pumping become necessary. Lost productivity and health effects caused by heat wave exposure could put over 4.5% of India's GDP at risk by the end of the decade, according to a report by McKinsey & Company.
