Graham Potter Should Be Laughing His Socks Off – Former Chelsea Star Slams Stamford Bridge Circus
Lampard has lost his opening four games in charge of Chelsea as their caretaker manager as the club continue their search for a permanent appointment.
Chelsea meekly crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid and have looked nothing short of clueless in the other two Premier League games.
Burley insisted that while Potter received criticism, the Chelsea board deserve scathing rebuke for trying to appease the fans by bringing in Lampard until the end of the season.
He is certain that keeping Potter until the end of the season would have been the smarter move rather than bringing in a manager who has struggled so far and is now on an awful run of form.
The former Chelsea star believes Potter is better off being outside Chelsea and rebuilding his career rather than being part of the shambolic circus they have become under the new owners.
Burley said on ESPN FC: “You talked about Potter, ask yourself a question, what was the mindset to bring Frank Lampard in?
“Did Chelsea think that all of a sudden they are going to go on this marvellous run? It’s the only reason [to appease the fans].
“Four defeats in a row and as bad as it was for Potter but did he have four defeats in a row? Did they have a better chance of finishing the season strongly with Graham Potter than Frank Lampard?
“If you are asking who is the better manager? It’s the former not the latter.
“It was an attempt to appease the fans and that’s all this has been and frankly if that’s the way you are running your business and the club, then it’s just a shambles.
“You might as well have given him [Potter] until the end of the season rather than go down this road with a manager who is clearly out of his depth and it’s not an easy job to come in and do that job, but he got sacked at Chelsea and Everton and now he is on a horrendous run at Chelsea.
“How is that going to appease the fans?
“I hope Graham Potter is sitting there, counting his cash with his staff and laughing his cotton socks off at the decision-making of this club.
“He is better out of this and rebuilding his career somewhere else rather than be in this circus.”
Chelsea have a game against Brentford at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday night before a trip to Arsenal.
