He Was Walking – Wesley Sneijder Slams Chelsea’s Big Money Signing
Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League after they lost 4-0 on aggregate against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
The Blues huffed and puffed but Real Madrid added two more goals to their first-leg lead and comfortably reached the semi-finals of the competition.
Chelsea signed Fernandez for a fee of €121m from Benfica in the winter window but the Argentinian had very little impact over the two legs.
Sneijder was particularly annoyed by his lack of effort and admitted for such a fee the least that can be expected from a player is to run around the pitch and work hard.
He picked out a moment when the midfielder lost the ball and just trudged along while Conor Gallagher ran past him to try and retrieve possession.
The former midfielder said on Dutch broadcaster RTL7: “I noticed that if you have been signed for more than €100m, the least you can do is not run out of lungs.
“He was walking.
“He lost the ball himself, then he had a moment to mourn. You see Enzo, just trudging along, while Gallagher ran past him.
“This is not possible. This must be addressed.”
The Dutchman also noticed that Fernandez did not track back for Rodrygo’s opening goal and stressed that he must be called out for his lack of effort.
“You are looking at a boy like that and wonder, what does he own? He doesn’t.
“I’d call him out tomorrow on the training pitch.”
