Taliban Releases 2,460 Prisoners Ahead of Eid-ul Fitr
The Interim government of Afghanistan has exempted 2,460 prisoners on the occasion of Eid-ul Fitr, the Supreme Court of Afghanistan said on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court further stated that this decree was issued following Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada’s instructions and the country’s chief justice verdict.
According to the decree, the sentences of 471 more inmates have also been reduced.
On Sunday, 41 prisoners, including seven women, were also released based on the same order and occasion from Ghor province.
According to the statement, the released prisoners committed crimes such as moral corruption, theft, bribery and drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, critics say that the release of the detainees and the exemption are a positive development. In contrast, the current regime “unfortunately criminalized numerous cases and termed its moral corruption, and now they consider it the same as drug trafficking, which is worrying, he said.
Furthermore, certain university professors, writers, protesting women, civil society and human rights advocates are jailed, and drug smugglers and criminals are frequently released.
