Many popular travel rewards programs offer a dining scheme that rewards you for spending at participating restaurants. These programs tend to offer 5 points or less per dollar; and while there are exceptions, they tend to be rewards currencies that aren't terribly valuable.
Even transferable points currencies are breaking into the dining scene (programs like Capital One Dining and Chase Dining are relatively new), but no flexible rewards dining program is as easy to use as the latest creation by Bilt Rewards: Bilt Dining. Bilt has created a proprietary wallet that will allow you to earn bonus rewards on more purchases — and they've started with restaurants.
Here's a quick look at what you can expect from Bilt Dining — and why it's a no-brainer for Bilt Rewards members, even if they don't have the Bilt Mastercard®.
We're focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card. These cards won't be worth it if you're paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it's important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.
Earn bonus points for purchases you'd make anyway with Bilt Dining
Bilt's latest app feature, Bilt Wallet, is a foreshadowing of very good things to come.
In short, it can store as many credit cards as you like. Those who have the Bilt Mastercard® can find their card in the wallet automatically.
So why would you want to store credit cards within the Bilt app?
Bilt has big plans for increasing the ways its members can earn bonus rewards. Its first addition is restaurants with the introduction of Bilt Dining. Here's how it works for Bilt members:
- Add any credit card to your Bilt Wallet as your preferred payment method (you'll earn 100 Bilt Points per linked card for the first three eligible cards you add to your Bilt Wallet)
- You'll automatically receive 5 bonus points per dollar when you use that card to pay your bill at a participating restaurant
- You'll also earn the rewards that your credit card would normally accrue for a dining purchase
For example, if you make the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card your default payment method, you'll earn 5 Bilt points per dollar at participating restaurants and 3 Chase points per dollar for restaurant spending. Or, if you were to use your Bilt Mastercard® as your preferred payment method, you would earn a total of 8 Bilt points per dollar (5x points for being a Bilt Rewards member and 3x points for restaurants spending with the Bilt Mastercard®).
Insider estimates Bilt points value to be 1.65 cents each when you transfer them to programs like Hyatt, United Airlines, and American Airlines for free hotel stays and airfare. That means you could earn between 8.25% and 13.2% back toward travel — and potentially more by using as your preferred payment method a credit card with more generous dining categories, such as the American Express® Gold Card.
You can view participating restaurants by tapping the "Dining" tab within the Bilt app. You can filter by price, location, cuisine, etc. At the moment, you'll only find eligible restaurants in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, and New York City. In other words, this isn't immediately serviceable for most of us — but Bilt is actively expanding that footprint.
Also, note that delivery services such as Uber Eats will not trigger bonus points.
What you need to know about Bilt Dining and Bilt Wallet
Bilt Wallet is a necessary evolution within the Bilt app to allow members the ability to earn bonus Bilt Rewards on a wider variety of purchases. It's also a huge get for those disinterested in the Bilt Mastercard®, as you may soon be able to earn Bilt Rewards for everyday purchases by swiping your credit card of choice.
This is another big development for Bilt Rewards as it continues to skyrocket in both popularity and utility.
