Speaking for the bench, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said more people living in the urban areas are coming out of the closet with regard to their sexual identity. The CJI added that the government does not have any data so far to corroborate its claims that the demand for legalisation of same-sex marriage is merely confined to an urban-elitist population.
