Alameda briefs: Kiwanis Club’s centennial celebration happening May 3

The Alameda Kiwanis Club invites one and all on May 3 to celebrate its 100th anniversary in honor of the club’s first meeting on May 2, 1923. Alameda has seen many changes in population and infrastructure, and throughout it all the Kiwanis Club has accompanied our town in community outreach, particularly towards children and youth. The club sponsors programs aiding children and recognizing young leaders and this year will award $100,000 in college scholarships to Alameda high school graduates.

The festivities will be held in the Alameda Elks Lodge ballroom at 2255 Santa Clara Ave. and will include dinner and presentations by special guests. A social half-hour will start at 6:15 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m. Bert West, the president of Kiwanis International, will be the club’s honored guest. Tickets are $65 per person and must be ordered in advance at alamedakiwanis.org or by check mailed to Alameda Kiwanis, P.O. Box 1217, Alameda, CA 94501.

Church’s annual Spring Boutique fundraiser Saturday

Immanuel Lutheran Church will host its annual Spring Boutique from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. More than 30 local artisans will offer handcrafted gifts, food and treats for the whole family. There will be a silent auction and a children’s book giveaway to honor Earth Day. The boutique is a fundraiser to help support the community outreach activities sponsored by the church, including the monthly Dine and Connect dinner for unhoused and food-challenged residents of Alameda.

Hornet to host presentation Saturday on Doolittle Raid

Officials and staff at the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum invite the public to join them for a presentation about the historic Doolittle Raid at 1 p.m. Saturday in the second deck’s wardroom.

Less than five months after the Pearl Harbor attack, U.S. officials wanted to raise the nation’s morale by striking back against Japan, which was winning victory after victory across the Pacific. Their plan was to put U.S. Army Air Force bomber planes on an aircraft carrier and send the ship near enough to Japan to launch the planes to bomb military targets on the Japanese home islands. The bombers would fly on to China while the carrier group would return to Pearl Harbor.

The presentation will focus on the Doolittle Raid, the role the USS Hornet CV-8 played in it (as well as the other ships) and the raid’s aftermath. Anyone interested in hearing more about this historic 1942 raid launched from the former Naval Air Station Alameda is invited.

Stephen Leavell, the Hornet’s guest speaker, has undertaken a lot of research about the raid’s B-25 bomber that flew on to the former Soviet Union instead of China. Attendees will definitely learn something new from this discussion. The normal museum admission fee will get visitors into this special presentation for free.

Outbound Posey Tube to close overnight on April 26

The Posey Tube (State Route 61) will closed at 10 p.m. April 26 for maintenance work and will reopen at 4:30 the following morning. One of two tunnels between Alameda and Oakland, Posey Tube traffic goes from Alameda to Oakland, and Webster Tube traffic goes in the other direction. The Webster Tube will remain open. Detours will be in place at the Posey Tube, and California Highway Patrol officers will be in place to assist motorists.

Homeless housing project to open May 3 on Fifth Street

Starting at 10 a.m. May 3, the city of Alameda will host a grand opening celebration for Dignity Village, a two-story, 47-unit interim supportive housing project at 2350 Fifth St., next to the College of Alameda.

Dignity Village will serve up to 61 individuals experiencing homelessness or chronic homelessness, with five units set aside for homeless youth ages 18 to 24. Each unit measures 138 square feet and has a private bathroom. Additional community buildings in Dignity Village include a dining space, meeting rooms, private offices for support services staff and storage for resident belongings.

People in need of housing will be referred through the Homeless Management Information System, which is managed by the Coordinated Entry Program of the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency’s Office of Homeless Care and Coordination. For the initial housing placement, Alameda’s unhoused residents will be given priority.

The city led the effort to develop Dignity Village, partnering with nonprofit developer DignityMoves and on-site service provider and property manager Five Keys Schools and Programs (Five Keys). The city was awarded a $12.3 million grant from the state’s Homekey Program to build Dignity Village and $2.35 million from Alameda County to cover five years of operating services.

Boys & Girls Club to host Kids Nite Out on May 5

Join the Alameda Boys & Girls Club for an unforgettable evening that will truly exemplify their mission. Parking at the club is very limited, so club officials recommend carpooling or ride-sharing.

Guided walks offered May 13 for Art of San Quentin exhibit

The West End Arts District and ArtReach invite you to experience creative works from the incarcerated population on death row at San Quentin State Prison. The Art of San Quentin exhibit explores the healing and redemptive properties of art making.

May 13 guided art walks will take visitors along Webster Street to witness visual art, live performance and film. Reservations are strongly encouraged to participate in the 45-minute guided art walk, and all proceeds from the sale of artwork will go directly to the artists.

The community-led West End Arts District (WEAD) was founded in 2015 to foster and celebrate the performing and visual arts on Alameda’s West End. Selections of the exhibit will be on display at the Fireside Lounge (thefiresidelounge.com) in Alameda for two months.

The event is free and open to the public, but note that the Fireside Lounge is only accessible for adults 21 years and older. The guided walk will end outside the Fireside Lounge so that attendees who are older than 21 can enter and enjoy the artwalk inside.
