At the end of the show the judges were left in awe when a mother revealed she was giving her chance to sing for Simon Cowell away to her teenage daughter.
Claire explained to Simon, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Bruno Tonioli that she had set up the audition only for talented schoolgirl Tia Connolly to get her moment to shine.
Breaking down in tears on stage, the 33-year-old told the judges: “She thinks it’s me who’s auditioning.
“She’s got me through some very hard times in my life and I feel like I owe her, so I’m giving my audition up for my daughter.
“This is my way of saying she’s fabulous because she deserves it and she’s an incredible person.”
But the moment left viewers divided, as after emotional Claire revealed her plan, one claimed on Twitter: “Giving her audition to her daughter looks like a fix. Lets hope she is good…”
Tia, 15, then belted out Whitney Houston hit I Didn’t Know My Own Strength, with Amanda telling Tia she “absolutely smashed it” and had a “massive career” ahead of her.
While Bruno added she had an “incredible quality because you were singing from your soul”.
Yet more suspicious viewers flooded Twitter, and one moaned: “They don’t need to lie and set up the giving my audition to my daughter. Transparency is important. It’s #BGT people have a problem with. It’s actually using Tia and her mum as pawns.”
Another said: “This whole thing with the mum giving up her audition to her daughter seems SO fake”
One more furious fan echoed: “So a mum gives up her slot at Britains got talent for her daughter!!! What a croc of s**t! Don’t tell me that’s not staged!!”
Others were annoyed to find that talented Tia had made a name for herself on TikTok.
One said: “Hmmm not performed before? Nearly 40,000 followers on TikTok…..”
Another tweeted: “Def scouted for the show mum and daughter have an insta account with 39k followers”
Tia won four yesses from the judges and others said they loved every minute of her performance.
One raved: “What an audition, well done Tia Connolly, hidden talent no more.”
A second shared: “Well done Tia you were absolutely fantastic and such a superstar I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been bullied
but you are lovely and beautiful.”
