Hamilton student wins
national chess event
A middle school student at Hamilton School took first place in a national chess tournament in Texas.
Larry Calle La Bou, a member of the Hamilton Chess Club, had a perfect score and the highest individual score at the National Middle School Championships in Round Rock on Saturday and Sunday.
In addition, the top four scorers from the Hamilton club — Larry, Jesus Mendieta, Joshua Gonzalez and Marcela Sherlyn Flores — came in fourth place nationally out of 53 teams in the competition.
Other team members who attended the competition included Samantha Lee, Orlando Lavarreda, Xiomara Alcantara, Angela Alcantara, Sofia Diaz, Kriss Diaz, Sophia Earls and Aaron Chen.
The tournament was sponsored by the U.S. Chess Federation and Rise Scholars Inc.

Men arrested after
Canal area stabbing
San Rafael police arrested two suspects Tuesday following a stabbing in the Canal area.
The crime happened at about 1:45 a.m. near Medway Road and Canal Street after an argument escalated to a fight, said Sgt. Justin Graham. Video footage helped police identify the suspects, whom officers found nearby.
Carlos Gonzales-Davila, 19, and Santos Gonzalez-Herrera, 21, both San Rafael residents, were booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of felony assault with a knife and felony conspiracy to commit a crime. Gonzalez-Herrera was also booked on a gang-related count.
Bail was set at $50,000 for both suspects, and Gonzalez-Herrera is also being held on a $25,000 misdemeanor warrant.
The victim was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover, Graham said.
Police accuse suspect
of attempted robbery
A San Rafael man was arrested on suspicion of trying to commit an armed robbery at Pickleweed Park.
The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The suspect, who was drinking alcohol with a group of people, allegedly pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the victim, according to the San Rafael Police Department.
The suspect left when the victim said he had no money. Police arrested the suspect nearby and recovered a .38-caliber pistol he discarded, said police Lt. Scott Eberle.
Maguiver Ostavio Vicente, 20, was booked into the Marin County Jail on allegations of robbery, carrying a loaded gun and having a loaded gun in a public place. He remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of $75,000 bail.
City approves permit
for biotech company
The city planning office has approved a permit for a small biotechnology laboratory at 805-807 D St.
Integrated Research Associates LLC, which works on virus vaccines, is moving from a smaller space at 4050 Redwood Highway.
A city zoning administrator held a hearing on the application on Friday.
