Meghan Markle’s ‘inappropriate’ NBA outfit was ‘frumpy & crumpled’ while Kim Kardashian ‘worked the FROW,’ says stylist
MEGHAN Markle has made her first hometown fashion blunder in front of thousands at a celeb-packed basketball game, a stylist has said.
And she thinks as sports fans like Kim Kardashian looked on, the former Suits star’s two-piece would’ve been better at a posh polo match.
At the NBA game on Tuesday night, Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, mingled with their entourage in an expensive VIP box.
During Meghan and Harry’s surprise appearance to watch the Los Angeles Lakers play with Memphis Grizzles, the Duchess of Sussex sported neutral makeup and a golden tan.
Meghan’s choice of an outfit for the event was a Staud pink shorts suit, teamed with a Prada handbag and Aquazarro high heels.
With her sleeves pushed up, Meghan, 41, looked animated and giggled with Harry as they watched the game with as many as 20,000 basketball fans.
These included celebrities like Kim Kardashian – who sat in the front row – and Adam Sandler.
Most had rocked up wearing low-key hoodies, sports caps, sneakers, and casual team T-shirts.
For the most part, everyone looked relaxed and blended in.
In an exclusive interview, stylist Tavia Sharp told The U.S Sun: “Meghan doesn’t seem to know what to wear to a basketball match.
“Her pink linen suit would’ve been more suitable for a high-end polo match or a posh daytime event outside.
“This didn’t suit a basketball game and was totally out of context.
“Meghan also knew she’d have cameras on her and that she’d be in the VIP box.
“Like Kim, she would’ve been preparing to have her and Harry’s photos taken, but it just feels like what she wore was inappropriate.
“Even when Beyonce goes to games, she’ll dress more casually. Still in high fashion brands, but it’s definitely more laid back.
“It could’ve worked if Meghan had worn jeans and a nice top. This all feels too bright for a basketball game.
“The others in her box were wearing navy and gray and tan-white, so the pink she chose did pop and create attention.
“Her suit was also crumpled and looked frumpy.
“It didn’t flatter her shape and hung off her body when she was walking around in her heels.
“This was all so off the mark for Meghan and very strange.”
During the game, Meghan and Harry were shown on the arena’s jumbotron, where the Prince tried to steal a kiss.
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian sat in the front row and appeared to confidently embrace her perfectly planned all-leather Balenciaga ensemble.
Flanked by momager Kris Jenner and her son, Saint West, the 42-year-old reality star was draped in an oversized black jacket and leather boots.
Kim accessorized her outfit with a big tan and black leopard-print bag.
She also brought along visor-like sunglasses to show complete her modern look.
“Kim was done up and on brand in the front row,” says Tavia, who has styled Drake and Chrissy Teigan.
“She approached this event, like every event, and as a fashion runway.
“Like Meghan, she knows she’s going to get photographed and people are going to mention her.
“She keeps all that up and works hard with her brands.
“Kim had her signature look in the arena.
“Although it was over the top, it was a casual attempt and she made it work for herself.
“Kris and Corey however, like Meghan, looked out of place.
“Saint West is the only one who really dressed appropriately for this basketball game.”
Meghan and Harry’s shock outing came ahead of his visit to London where he’s attending his father, King Charles’ coronation.
Meghan and their children are staying at home in Montecito since the event falls on the same day as their son Archie’s birthday.
Interestingly, since relocating to the US, Meghan and Harry have become a firm fixture on the Los Angeles sporting scene with a focus on polo.
Prince Harry, 38, has joined the Los Padres polo team which plays the local charity circuit.
In May, Meghan wore white shorts at a match at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club.
She also wore the same type of shorts but in denim in June while cheering Harry from the sidelines.
“Meghan wore the correct type of outfits to these polo matches,” adds Tavia.
“Pink linen just isn’t right for a basketball game. It’s a breathable fabric but has natural wrinkles.
“It’s surprising Meghan wore this to a game where she was constantly standing up and sitting down in those high heels.
“These basketball games are casual where people don’t really wear suits or ones with bermuda shorts.
“Meghan’s outfit didn’t work for the event at all.”
