Report: Club are now willing to sell midfielder amidst Tottenham interest
According to a report in Leonino, Sporting Lisbon are now willing to sell Tottenham target, Manuel Ugarte this summer.
Ugarte is one of several young players who has caught the eye at Sporting this season, having established himself as a mainstay in the middle of the park for Ruben Amorim’s men.
Spurs were first credited with an interest in Ugarte back in November (A Bola) on the back of their two Champions League group stage clashes against Sporting Lisbon.
Record (07/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) even suggested earlier this month that the Lilywhites had ‘prioritised’ a move for the Uruguayan this summer.
The report added that the Premier League club have ‘promised to move forward with an official proposal’ for Ugarte, who is said to have a release clause of €60m (£53.1m) in his contract.
Leonino now claims that Sporting’s exit from Europe and the increasing likelihood of them missing out on next season’s Champions League might force the club to cash in on Ugarte.
The publication states that the Portuguese club are ‘preparing to sell’ at least one of the stars of the current squad, with the midfielder now looking the most likely to depart.
It is explained that selling Ugarte for a ‘significant financial gain’ would be the best way for the club to balance their books this summer.
Spurs Web Opinion
Perhaps one of the reasons that Tottenham are monitoring Ugarte and Pedro Goncalves is that they are aware of Sporting’s need to sell their stars in order to balance their books.
The North London club might believe they can make use of the relationship they formed with the Portuguese club during the Pedro Porro talks to their advantage.
