[Men's Wrestling] Mies named new Friends Men's Wrestling head coach
WICHITA, Kan. – Friends University VP of Athletics and Strategic Expansion Dr. Rob Ramseyer has announced that Tyler Mies has accepted the position of men's wrestling head coach.
"We are pleased to welcome Tyler as our men's wrestling coach," said Ramseyer. "He has a championship pedigree and fits well with our current coaching staff in the athletic department. He'll bring high expectations and care to our program and we are confident he is highly capable of leading the program to a high level of success in the classroom, on the mat, and in our community."
Mies won't have far to travel to arrive on campus, as he's served as an assistant wrestling coach at Newman University in Wichita for the past four seasons.
During his tenure at Newman, Mies has helped mentor four NCAA qualifiers and one All-America performer.
"We are tremendously excited to introduce Tyler Mies as our new men's wrestling head coach," said new Friends women's wrestling head coach Tim Prescott, who has also served as an assistant coach for the Falcon wrestling programs since their inception in 2021.
"Tyler was a phenomenal athlete, earning multiple All-American Honors at the NCAA D-II level, who has a proven method of success. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that will have an immediate impact on our young program. I am excited to share this vision and dream with Tyler, who is equally as eager and hungry to build something special. Now that a foundation has been laid out, the best is yet to come!"
Mies also enjoyed a standout collegiate wrestling career at Newman, where his accolades included high-level honors such as a two-time NCAA D-II All-American (2018, 2019), MIAA Freshman of the Year, Newman Rookie of the Year and Newman Athlete of the Year along with being named the 2019 Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA) Senior Collegiate Wrestler of the Year.
A testament to his evident leadership skills, Mies served as team captain of the Newman wrestling team for five seasons.
Also a solid student-athlete, Mies earned a first-team All-Academic Wrestling award on three occasions (2016-18) and twice earned an All-American Academic Wrestling award (2018, 2019). He was also a Dean's List honoree during every semester he attended college.
An entrepreneur, Mies has owned Mies Detailing since 2019 and also served as Owner/COTA for an organization entitled Blue Chip Health Professionals from 2019-2022.
"I am excited and grateful for this opportunity," said Mies. "I look forward to growing as a person and accomplishing big things here at Friends University."
Mies graduated from Newman University with a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Science in 2018 and then earned his MBA in Healthcare Administration from Newman in 2020.
