Levi Bellfield ‘signed detailed confession to Lin and Megan Russell murders’

Milly Dowler’s killer Levi Bellfield has signed a confession to the 1996 murders of mum Lin Russell and her daughter Megan, it has been reported.

The new document is said to contain details only the person who perpetrated the horrific crime would know.

Michael Stone, the man sentenced to life for the torture and killing of the woman and child, believes the latest development could lead to him being freed.

Bellfield previously claimed responsibility for the deaths last year, but later reportedly denied it.

It was later reported that the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) had not found any forensic evidence tying the serial killer to the scene.

However, his solicitor Theresa Clark told The Mirror that the new statement contains more information that could prove vital to proving Bellfield’s guilt.

She said: ‘This is a new and more detailed one.

‘The statement made last year was never signed by him but he’s subsequently done a written statement which he’s signed.’

Stone told the newspaper: ‘I’ve been in prison for 26 years for a crime I did not commit.

‘I know that he [Bellfield] did those murders. He’s just revealed some information recently that’s come to me through lawyers.

‘It’s information that he would only know if he had done it.’

Dr Lin Russell, 45, and her daughters six-year-old Megan and Josie, nine, were tied up, blindfolded and beaten with a claw hammer in the village of Chillenden, Kent, in July 1996.

Police only realised Josie had survived the terrifying attack when they saw her moving. However, she had sustained serious injuries.

Stone was arrested a year later and was convicted after trials in 1998 and 2001, though he has always protested his innocence.

Ms Clark said the latest confession, which was allegedly signed at the beginning of the year, has been sent to the CCRC for consideration as part of an appeal from Stone.

Bellfield is currently serving a life sentence for the killing of 13-year-old Millie Dowler in 2002, and has also been convicted of murdering Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange.

He will never be considered for parole.
