Ratcliffe's shock proposal would see two Glazers profit from stadium expansion - report
The Manchester United takeover saga has taken a fresh twist after the Daily Mail revealed yesterday that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is willing to let the Glazers remain stakeholders of the Premier League club.
The report mentions that Ratcliffe’s INEOS are preparing a bid to own just over 50 percent of United. This will allow Avram and Joel Glazer to retain their stake of about 20 percent.
It’s important to note that this deal structure would leave the Glazers without control over the club or any of its decisions – they would have no voting rights.
However, it would mean they would still be paid dividends as shareholders and that they could sell their stake for a profit at a future date – since the club’s value is expected to rise once the stadium is renovated and expanded.
The Red Devils have set a loose deadline for Friday if any bidders wish to make fresh proposals.
Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is the other major candidate looking for a complete buyout of the club. He is expected to table his third bid today.
It has been reported that the Glazers value the club at £6 billion.
Ratcliffe’s shock plot could infuriate United’s supporters
United’s fanbase won’t welcome any bid allowing the Glazers to stay at the club.
The owners and the fans do not have a positive relationship since their leveraged buyout in 2005 that plunged the club into colossal debt.
The fans have been vocal in every game this season with their anti-Glazer chants. They heavily oppose the current regime and want the new owners to take over without any presence of the American owners.
A large section of the United fanbase will now want Sheikh Jassim to win the sale process.
The Qatari’s bid will wipe out all debt and ensure a full takeover, with no role for the Glazers. He has also promised to invest in the club’s infrastructure and support local communities.
The uncertainty around the club’s ownership won’t help Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman will want to start planning his summer incomings and outgoings before the transfer window opens.
He needs to know what the transfer budget is allocated to him so he can target players accordingly.
