UN Security Council to Condemn Taliban’s Ban on Afghan Women
On Thursday, the U.N. Security Council is set to vote on a resolution urging the Taliban government in Afghanistan to lift its increasingly severe restrictions on women and girls quickly.
A resolution denouncing the Taliban’s restriction on Afghan women working for the U.N. in Afghanistan is expected to be adopted by the U.N. Security Council and was drafted by the United Arab Emirates and Japan.
According to the resolution, the restriction is “unprecedented in the history of the United Nations” and emphasizes the “indispensable role of women in Afghan society.” The resolution also asserted that preventing Afghan women from working for the U.N. “undermines human rights and humanitarian principles.”
UAE U.N. Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh said the restrictions “could jeopardize the operations of the U.N. in Afghanistan as a whole” and that the Security Council could not stay silent, Reuters reported.
The challenges in Afghanistan are multifaceted and must also be addressed,” she said. “But what is clear is that without women, the dire situation in the country cannot be addressed sustainably.”
The session by the Security Council comes ahead of the U.N. meeting, which will be held in Doha on May 1-2 in Afghanistan.
The Security Council will vote days before a planned international meeting in Doha on May 1-2 in Afghanistan.
Special representatives on Afghanistan from several countries will meet behind closed doors with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss a unified strategy for dealing with the Taliban.
Since August 2021, the Taliban has introduced suppressive policies against women, which wipe out the female presence from society, education and working with international organizations.
Despite massive condemnation by the U.N., the U.S., the U.K., the Islamic organizations and several other regional and international organizations, the de facto government continues banning women’s presence in the political, social, and economic arenas.
