More than half of the population in Mandya belongs to the Vokkaliga community, the same as that of JDS leaders HD Deve Gowda and HD Kumaraswamy who have significant influence over its members. The district is adjacent to Hasan, the home turf of JDS first family. Most of its villagers are engaged in sugarcane and paddy farming.
