CT postal carrier under investigation for mail theft allegedly stole packages containing cocaine he intended to distribute
A Hamden man has been indicted after federal officials allege that he used his position as a mail courier to steal packages, including two that contained cocaine he allegedly intended to distribute.
A grand jury in Hartford returned the indictment for Shawn R. Fuller, 36, on Wednesday, charging him with one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and three counts of theft of mail by a postal employee, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Fuller, a U.S. Postal Service carrier in Meriden, was under investigation for stealing packages, according to court documents. On April 17, an investigator reportedly saw him opening two mail packages at the Meriden post office, removing two items from the packages and placing them in the trunk of his car, federal officials said. He then told his supervisors he had to leave work for the day.
Shortly thereafter, the Hamden Police Department pulled Fuller over for an unspecified motor vehicle violation, and a K9 alerted officers to possible narcotics in the trunk, according to federal officials. Police searched the trunk and reportedly found four kilograms of cocaine, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Fuller was then placed under arrest.
Fuller is currently free on a $100,000 bond. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison on the possession charge and a maximum of five years for each of the mail theft charges.
