I’m a dog expert – here are four breeds you should NEVER get if you don’t have time to groom them properly
A DOG expert revealed four breeds of pooches pet lovers should never own if they do not have the time to groom them properly.
The claims are in line with animal group RSPCA’s welfare policies, who warned time poor dog owners could face large fines for neglecting their canines.
It comes as the Western Australian branch of the agency released a shocking image that showed a Maltese-cross who had severely matted fur that was riddled with grass seeds.
The dog, named Lucas, was subsequently taken to the vets who forcibly removed more than 700g of its hair.
Kylie Green, a manager at RSPCA, told Perth Now they had seen a number of similar cases of neglected dogs, which was unacceptable.
She said: “We’re seeing more dogs with terribly overgrown coats that point to many months without grooming.
“RSPCA WA currently has two Maltese crosses, two Lhasa Apsos and an elderly toy poodle in care who were in such poor condition that we’re looking at prosecuting their owners for animal cruelty.
“It’s not just about looks — when a dog’s fur gets long and matted it can lead to discomfort, pain, restricted movement and eye, ear or skin infections.
“All dogs require washing and grooming, and ignoring these needs in a high-care breed can quickly become a welfare concern.”
Animal cruelty through neglect can attract an eye-watering fine of more than £26,000 or up to five years prison in Western Australia.
Four common breeds that require high maintenance are poodle crosses, Maltese crosses, the Bichon Frise and the Cavalier Spaniel.
Kylie warned constant grooming came at a cost and people needed to factor that in before becoming dog owners.
She said: “If you are struggling to care for your animal, reach out to friends, family, or a rescue group like RSPCA WA before things get out of hand.
“Please don’t let your pet suffer.”
The RSPCA said Lucas would continue to be looked after and will be listed on an adoption website when he is ready for a new home.
