SEATTLE — Angel City FC and the OL Reign played to a scoreless draw in their second NWSL Challenge Cup match on Wednesday night.
The first half was largely a midfield battle with neither team doing much threatening, but Reign forward Tziarra King fired an angled shot off the far post in the ninth minute. Angel City had the better of the possession in the first half but midfielder Lily Nabet had one of the team’s few looks at goal when her shot was blocked in the 41st minute.
King had another opportunity in the 43rd minute when she ran on to a cross to the center of the box from defender Sofia Huerta and fired a shot from 10 yards out, but Angel City defender Jasmyne Spencer blocked the ball out over the end line for a corner kick.
Angel City forward Jun Endo had a chance early in the opening minute of the second half, receiving the ball from defender M.A. Vignola. She drove forward into the box and fired off a shot, but Reign goalkeeper Laurel Ivory made the easy save.
Two minutes later, Reign forward Bethany Balcer played a through ball to midfielder Olivia Athens, who was one-on-one with Angel City goalkeeper Brittany Isenhour, but Isenhour dove and smothered Athens’ shot.
The best opportunity of the night came in the 62nd minute when Angel City defender Sarah Gorden headed a corner kick by forward Claire Emslie into the 6-yard box, where forward Katie Johnson flicked the ball on target from point-blank range. Johnson’s header had Ivory beaten, but Reign defender Ryanne Brown made a goal-line clearance to keep the game scoreless.
Angel City midfielder Savannah McCaskill had a chance in the 85th minute. She took a short pass from Emslie, cut away from the goal to create space, then turned to put a shot on target. Ivory dove and made an impressive save, sending the ball out for a corner kick.
Angel City is 0-1-1 in the Challenge Cup, sitting in third place behind the Reign (1-0-1) and the San Diego Wave (1-0-0) with four matches left. Angel City’s next Challenge Cup match is May 31 at Portland.
Angel City returns to regular league play on Saturday at 5 p.m. when it hosts the Kansas City Current.
