I’m a pest expert & my four tips will banish annoying squirrels from your garden for good, it’s all about certain smells
A PEST whizz has revealed how to effectively banish pesky squirrels from your garden for good – and how certain smells can help.
Although inherently harmless, squirrels can cause quite the damage in your garden, such as digging holes in flower beds and munching on hosepipes.
Luckily, one guru, Jordan Foster, a pest control expert at Fantastic Pest Control, has come to rescue with a few simple tips and tricks to tackle the issue.
According to the pro, who chatted with The Express, these animals are quite particular about certain smells – and you should use this to your advantage.
One such aroma squirrels cannot stand is coffee, he claimed, instructing to simply spread coffee grounds around the area.
Just as effective is the refreshing scent of peppermint – create a water-peppermint oil concoction and generously spray around the areas where they’re causing the most problems.
Another worthwhile method to give a try is using apple cider vinegar, which usually retails for a little over £3 at Tesco.
“You can soak rags in apple cider vinegar and place them in your shed or loft or spray a diluted solution over hard surfaces in your garden.
“Be careful not to get it on your plants – although it can obliterate weeds, it can also ruin your plants.”
If all of this has provided no results, Jordan advised adding strong chilli powder or pepper sauce, such as Tabasco, onto bird food.
Whilst birds, it’s believed, are not too fussed with chilli, squirrels cannot cope with the burning sensation and will leave the food alone.
Once these animals have been deterred from your garden, it’s best to know how to prevent them from returning.
- Use squirrel-resistant bird feeders rather than putting out loose food.
- The whizz recommended to cover bulbs with a wire mesh – this will allow the plants to grow whilst also stopping squirrels from digging them up.
- Removing a tree or branch containing an empty squirrel nest.
