DeMarcus Walker’s Live Reaction To The Darnell Wright Pick Is Must-See
DeMarcus Walker signed with the Chicago Bears in March as a crucial piece of their rebuilding efforts on the defensive line. They feel his versatility to play outside and inside will be invaluable. It appears the veteran is already making himself right at home. He’s already enjoying the perks of living near the city and seems to love the new culture he’s stepped into. That might explain why he was so invested in the team’s 1st round pick on April 27th. Walker watched it live with everybody else, curious to see what GM Ryan Poles would do.
He admitted on Twitter at some trepidation they might take Georgia defensive tackle, Jalen Carter. No doubt that would’ve conflicted with Walker’s playing time. After the Bears traded down, he waited with rapt attention. Then the announcement came down: Darnel Wright, offensive tackle, Tennessee.
Walker posted a video of his reaction. He was curious at first, uncertain of what the Bears were getting. He liked the idea Wright was coming from the SEC. He’d be somebody to battle against in training camp. Then the highlight reel started.
DeMarcus Walker recognized Wright’s appeal immediately.
He kept calling him “a dog” for a reason. For those who aren’t family, a dog is a term used to describe a player that has a nasty edge to him. That certainly lines up with what every evaluator has said about Wright. He has a violent streak that shows up in almost every rep he has, whether it’s run-blocking or pass protection. If he gets a chance to give defenders a little extra, he will. Walker recognizing this shouldn’t be a surprise. He, too, plays the game like a dog. It’s no doubt one of the reasons the Bears liked him.
Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus have said from the beginning they want big, smart, athletic, and violent players. That was their profile. To their credit, they haven’t deviated from that. Wright is a perfect fit. DeMarcus Walker saw it right away. Now the two will have a chance to lock horns this summer in training camp, getting each other ready for the season ahead. Walker understands he’ll need his chin strap buckled tight. It figures to be a war every single day.
