Firefighters, public works crews and animal control officers rescue dog from drainage pipe in Bloomfield
Firefighters, public works crews and animal control officers all came together in Bloomfield on Wednesday to rescue a dog that had crawled into a 200-foot drainage pipe.
The animal was about 40 to 50 feet into the pipe, making it impossible to reach without digging up part of the pipe, according to the Bloomfield Center Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched at about 11 a.m. to the area of 301 Tunxis Ave. for an animal rescue and discovered once they got there that they could not access the dog because of how far it had crawled into the pipe, firefighters said.
Crews from the Bloomfield Department of Public Works responded and used an excavator to dig a hole to get access to the pipe.
“Once dug up, crews pushed hose behind the dog to give him the remaining 10 feet to get out of the pipe,” firefighters said.
Bloomfield Center Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Jim Simone said the rescue was a collaborative effort between firefighters, public works and animal control.
