Unsung heroes came up big for the Redwood High softball team in the MCAL playoff final Friday night to help the Giants turn back defending champ Marin Catholic 7-4.
The Giants got a huge contribution from backup freshman catcher Elle McElreath, who replaced Kaela Sparler after the Giants’ senior starter took a ball to the head in the top of the fourth inning.
Marin Catholic manufactured a run to go ahead 4-3 after the switch but was held scoreless the rest of the game. In her very first appearance as the catcher in a high school game, McElreath even threw out the Wildcats’ speedy Sammy Horn trying to steal second in the top of the sixth.
Asked if she was nervous about the change at catcher, Redwood coach Emily Atkinson said “Absolutely” especially since McElreath would be catching left-handed ace Georgia Pineda.
“A lefty pitcher is always a little bit different,” said Atkinson. “She did amazing. I’m very happy with how she played. Kaela is a senior so she’ll probably be our catcher next year.”
Redwood junior outfielder Josie Templeton also delivered in the clutch with her first high school home run. The Giants had pulled ahead 5-4 with a two-run fourth inning before Templeton’s blast down the right-field line rolled all the way to the fence for two RBIs and the final margin.
“I haven’t gotten anything more than a single this year,” said Templeton, who was on the junior varsity team as a freshman and sophomore. “I was caught up in the moment and so glad I pulled through for my team. It was a very close game and we were all on our toes. You could tell the energy was going up and down. We needed something.”
The Giants (18-4-1) won for the 11th straight time to add the MCAL playoff title to their regular-season league crown. Third-seeded Marin Catholic (15-6) is expected to join Redwood in the North Coast Section Division II playoffs next week with an at-large berth.
Marin Catholic coach Dave Albini, who picked up his 200th career victory in the MCAL semifinals against San Rafael on Wednesday, praised the Giants’ defense especially shortstop Ashley Weingart and left-fielder Maizy Crawford, who both made run-saving plays.
“They were solid on defense tonight,” said Albini. “They hit some balls in the right spots. It just didn’t work out for us. We’re a pretty young team. We just needed to play a little better tonight.”
After Redwood grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats answered with a pair of runs in the second. Horn beat out an infield single with the bases loaded to make it 2-1 and Lauren Osheroff followed with an RBI single to left.
Marin Catholic went ahead 3-2 with a run in the top of the third after a pick-off play at first resulted in a two-base error. Anna Held made the Giants pay with an infield RBI single.
Winning pitcher Pineda helped get the run right back with an RBI double to the right-center field gap.
In the top of the fourth, after Sparler was injured, Marin Catholic center fielder Gracyn Lovette walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Anya Jaroszewski.
Trailing 4-3, Redwood went ahead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. First baseman Maddie Sofnas had the key hit with a double to right-center field.
Weingart and Pineda had two hits each to lead the Giants. Horn had two infield singles for the Wildcats while Lovette went 2 for 3.
